If you have a passion for wine and love the science behind how it is made, at some point or another you may have thought about becoming a winemaker. Education

Generally, a person who is considering becoming a winemaker will need a bachelor’s degree in Enology or related area of study. A person must then gain experience in the field by either internships or working under a current winemaker for at least five years. Knowledge of all the different varieties of grapes and strong technical skills in the winemaking process will be necessary as well. As the leader of the wine making process a strong background in management and organizational skills are necessary. A person must possess the ability to speak in public and handle public relations for the winery as well.

Job Details

As a winemaker, you will have a number of responsibilities. Your main job will be to oversee the production of the wine; this includes supervising all of the staff who are involved in the process. The winemaker will also be in charge of keeping the budget, maintaining records, training staff, and keeping inventory. The winemaker will also need to work closely with the vineyard manager to make sure the production of the grapes is on track.

The average salary of a winemaker will vary depending on the number of years of experience he/she has. Where the vineyard is located will also affect the amount of a winemaker’s salary. However, the national average salary for a winemaker is $93,000. Winemakers who work in the Napa Valley area and have over 10 years of experience can expect a salary of over $107,000.
